Real Estate - Overview

The majority of Swiss residents (65%) do not own their own homes or apartments, but rather are tenants. Two factors largely responsible for this are the high cost of residential property and the dense population, particularly in urban and suburban areas.  Citizens of EU/EFTA member countries who have residence permits in Switzerland have the same rights as a Swiss citizen in terms of real estate business.  For third-country nationals, regulations vary based on the type of permit the individual has, but are generally fairly restrictive, unless an individual has a long-term residence permit.
